College Light Opera Co (CLOC), which performs at Highfield Theater, Highfield Drive, Off Depot Avenue in Falmouth, MA, plans PINAFORE June 25-29 and IDA (for the first time since 1983) July 30-Aug 3. The Polymnia Choral Society presents An Evening of Gilbert and Sullivan, featuring selections from PINAFORE, PIRATES, and MIKADO, Saturday, June 1, 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall, 590 Main St., Melrose, MA.

Professor James Reyes conducts the Society in his farewell performance, with soloists Denise Konicek, Kathryn Wright, Sharon Brown, Alan Combs, Charles Turner, and Tom Jones.

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of New York will hold its next meeting on June 15 at CAMI Hall, 165 W. 57th St (near 7th Ave.), NYC. Doors open at 7:30; the meeting starts at 7:45, and the Inner Brotherhood go out for coffee afterwards.

Longwood Opera will be performing Benjamin Britten's comic opera Albert Herring June 7 at 8 pm and June 9 at 2:30 pm in Needham, MA, June 14 at 8 pm in Salem, MA, and June 16 at 2:30 pm in Cambridge, MA . Yes, We know it isn't - but it's a comic opera set in an English town - and - and - your editor, Marion Leeds Carroll, is playing the role of Mrs. Herring! The Connecticut G&S Society will hold auditions for PIRATES on June 9 & 11, 6-8 PM at the Portland Congregational Church, 554 Main St., Portland, CT. The Sudbury (MA) Savoyards' summer show will be Gilbert's Engaged, directed by Chuck Berney. Rebecca Hains tells us, with great delight, that she and some friends will be presenting excerpts from Candide on June 21 and 22 - and yes, We know it isn't - except that Rebecca also tells Us she'll be leaving town in the fall to pursue a PhD at Temple University in Philadelphia - so this may be our last time to enjoy her talent!

Sudbury's Winter 2003 show will be PATIENCE

Juliet Cunningham will host another Wednesday-night G&S Sing-Along Series this July at 7:30 PM at the Boston Church of the New Jerusalem (140 Bowdoin St., Boston, MA). The schedule for this year's series: July 3 - IOLANTHE | July 10 - RUDDIGORE | July 17 - GONDOLIERS | July 24 - PIRATES | July 31 - MIKADO

If you want a lead role, arrive at 7:15 to request it, or contact Juliet by the evening before the show. (Everyone is welcome to sing chorus.) Some choral scores will be available - or bring your own score. Requested donation: $5. The church is easily accessible by T (Park Street station). The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Nova Scotia (also 25 this year!) is planning a weekend Sing-out for July 19-21, 2002. The 9th International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival will again take place in two locations.

  • Sunday, July 28 - Sunday, August 4, 2002 at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne. This part of the Festival will comprise only Professional Performances or Non-adjudicated amateur performances.

  • Saturday, August 3 -Sunday, August 18, 2002 at the Opera House and Pavillion Gardens in Buxton. The second and third weekends in Buxton will contain the professional performances; all other dates in Buxton will comprise the competitive part of the Festival.
